Strictly Ballroom the Musical was a sequinned spectacular!

GTOs meet stars Fernando Mira and Zizi Strallen

Encore invited readers to see a production of Strictly Ballroom The Musical, taking place at London’s Piccadilly Theatre. Jessie Whitehead reports back on the fun night out.

OVER 40 GTO readers and guests joined me for this exclusive readers’ evening organised courtesy of 2018 Group Travel Awards Best Ticketing Agency winner, Encore.

Strictly Ballroom the Musical, based on Baz Luhrmann’s film Strictly Ballroom, told the story of a ballroom dancer who sets his sights on winning the Pan-Pacific Grand Prix dancing competition. Set in Australia, the story follows the character of Scott, played magnificently by Jonny Labey. Scott’s ambition is to dance his own radical moves but he ends up dancing with beginner Fran, played by Zizi Strallen. During the show she transforms into a beautiful dancer and the pair perform an exhilarating fusion of dance-styles – that are not strictly ballroom!

Will Young as the compere, Wally Strand, takes the audience on a humorous journey into the world of ballroom. His brilliant rendition of favourites, including Love is in the Air, Happy Feet and Dancing With Myself, had the audience hooked. The standout song of Time After Time, while Scott and Fran are dancing, was very moving. Exceptional performances included Scott’s father, Doug – a meek and shy man, until his secret past is revealed – and Fernando Mira, Fran’s father, who wowed us with an unexpected Paso Doble. All members of the cast were outstanding and brought much energy to the show. Not having seen Baz Luhrmann’s film, I did not know what to expect, but it was a fun-filled, joyous evening with many of us laughing out loud.

After the show Sergio Cicalo from Encore arranged drinks and the opportunity to meet performers Zizi Strallen and Fernando Mira, who were very friendly and posed for pictures with everyone. We all had a wonderful evening and I would highly recommend seeing this fabulous musical. It was fun, funny, energetic and had us singing along and exiting the theatre on a high – you won’t regret it!
