Everybody’s Talking About Jamie
Everybody certainly was Talking about Jamie! Before the show, I heard people wondering what it was going to be like. During the interval I heard comments such as “really enjoying it”, “great voices”, and at the end of the show, well … everybody certainly was talking about Jamie, Wow, Wow and Wow!’ Julie Hart reports back on our recent Readers’ Night to this new London musical.
In October, 20 GTOs and their guests were treated to a visit to the musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie at the Apollo Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue, London.
Based on a true story, the musical follows 16-year-old Jamie, who doesn’t quite fit in at school. An out-of-place Sheffield starlet who dreams of fame and fortune on the drag circuit, Jamie enlists the help of his incredibly supportive friends and family to defy expectations and take his first shaky high-heeled steps into the limelight. A heart-warming story about defeating the bullies and staying true to who you are, this glittering musical received wide acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
I found the show to be often poignant, yet also full of humour with some great one-liners from some of the characters, especially Ray, the best friend of Jamie’s Mum. The production was excellent in portraying the lives of today’s younger generation using believable contemporary mannerisms, language and dance, as well as the use of mobiles and social media.
Understudy Adam Taylor was outstanding as Jamie New, realistically fighting insecurities and discrimination, with emotion, high energy, and a fantastic voice. How did he walk in those shoes, let alone dance! Other particularly fine performances were from Sabrina Sandhu, playing Jamie’s friend Pritti Pasha – a charismatic and strong character, and Melissa Jacques as Margaret New, Jamie’s mother – a touching and dignified performance, and a wonderful voice.
I’d like to thank the cast who gave up their time to say ‘hi’ and to have their photo taken with some of our readers.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is suitable for teenagers through to adults. A feel-good show that will inspire you to achieve your dreams.
On behalf of GTO magazine and our readers I would also like to thank Nimax Theatres for their fantastic hospitality, interval drinks, great seats and the opportunity to see the show.
“We really enjoyed the show, and thought that the actor who played Jamie was great. It was good to see such a talented group of youngsters playing the school children. An all-round great evening and we have already recommended the show to other people.”
