An evening at The View from The Shard

Recently, 20 GTOs and their guests visited The View from The Shard. Julie Hart reports back.

On a clear and calm December evening, 20 group travel organisers and their guests took the lift to the 69th floor of The View from The Shard.

With champagne in hand, guests were free to wander round taking in the magnificent and breath-taking views across London, from the Barbican Estate round to The Olympic Park, Thames Barrier and Houses of Parliament, to name but a few.

Trying the Virtual Reality Vertigo

Off to the open-air Skydeck on level 72, where views on a clear day extend to approximately 35 miles in each direction. The interactive telescopes located here are informative and very easy to use. Each of our group organisers and their guests had the opportunity to test one of two new Virtual Reality experiences. One is The Slide. On this, travelling at speeds up to 100mph and 800ft above London, you’ll swoop and slide through the city’s skyline. The second is the terrifying Vertigo –  see the building fall away beneath your feet leaving you to walk across The Shard’s early infrastructure whilst balancing along the beam. Whether you laugh or scream, it will be a conversation topic you’ll re-live time and again with your friends.

On behalf of the magazine and GTO readers who attended we would like to thank Encore Tickets for the opportunity to visit and their generous hospitality, including champagne and a goody bag for each guest, along with the staff at The Shard who were extremely helpful.

Seeing London lit up at night is a magical experience to be enjoyed by all at The View from The Shard.

“We enjoyed the evening very much. The views from The Shard on such a cold clear evening were amazing. It was a wonderful experience. I will certainly recommend a visit to all my friends.”

“I had no idea about the virtual experiences and was very dubious on what to do. After experiencing the virtual slide, I would recommend this to everyone. I was fascinated how they did this. It was so much fun and felt so real.”
