Celebrity Special – Madame Tussauds and Big Bus London

About to board the Big Bus.

In November 30 GTO readers and their guests were treated to a Celebrity Special courtesy of Madame Tussauds and Big Bus London. Jessie Whitehead reports back from the red carpet.

Our day began with a  Big Bus Red Tour, hosted by a funny and friendly guide. We started near the London Eye, with a glass of prosecco, as he told us stories about London while we saw the sights of the city from the open top bus. Highlights of the tour included the Tower of London, the Globe Theatre,  and Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub where Charles Dickens used to drink. We also travelled through Trafalgar Square, and saw the filming location of Bridget Jones’ flat, and Australia House, which doubled as Gringott’s Bank in the Harry Potter films. Despite the grey day outside, we enjoyed seeing the beautiful sights of London and the experience on the Big Bus was really interesting and made all the better by the knowledgable tour guide who filled us in with lots of trivia about the city.

Arriving at Madame Tussauds we were greeted by the Merlin team for light refreshments. Madame Tussauds is a self-led exhibition, so we were able to spend as much time as we wanted looking at each waxwork.

We began in the ‘Party’ section, which was full of A-listers including Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, George Clooney, Dame Helen Mirren and Kate Winslet. There’s also a Bollywood section in this room.

We enjoyed the film zone – home to Audrey Hepburn, Dame Judi Dench, E.T. and a large Shrek which was probably twice my height!

Jessie Whitehead and Julie Hart meet Shrek.

The next room contained sporting legends and people from history, including Shakespeare and Dickens, as well as the Royal family, from Henry VIII to the Royals as they are today. There was a section for music stars throughout the years, and another for World Leaders. We all loved the chance to pose and take photos alongside so many famous stars.

We then entered the Sherlock Experience, which combined actors with interactive and textured theatrical sets, hidden with clues, and then went on the Spirit of London Taxi Ride, which took us through the journey of London’s history while sitting in a London black cab. This was followed by a Marvel Super Heroes 4D film, with surprise sprays of water and air, and the Star Wars experience, with characters from the iconic films.

Thank you Big Bus Tours for being so friendly, and the team at Merlin for accommodating us so well and giving us the celebrity treatment.

It was a fabulous day!

“The Big Bus Tour – Loved the whole thing. I had never done one anywhere, and I will now always try and do one in a new city. The tour guide was 10/10, and the tour was just so interesting! – I was incredibly impressed.”

Alex Nearchou, Oxon

“We ended up leaving just after the attraction closed – there is a lot to see at Madame Tussauds! We would certainly take a group there. Thank you for the opportunity! ”
